Actor as Sakuramaru

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of an actor in the role of the young samurai Sakuramaru, one of three triplet brothers who become the victims of divided loyalty. Sakuramaru stands next to the shafts of a carriage belonging to the evil Shihei, who employs his brother Matsuomaru, leading to friction between the men. He thrusts his hand out with an agitated frown, trying to intervene in an argument. He wears a plaid outer robe over a red kimono patterned with his namesake sakura or cherry blossoms. Tall pine trees atop a grassy slope provide a backdrop for the figure. A nice expressive character.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 15" x 10 1/8" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. A few small wormholes and holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
