The Heroic Tales of Jiraiya, 1852

Comments - Handsome scene from the play "Jiraiya goketsu monogatari" (The Heroic Tales of Jiraiya), which tells the story of the young magician Jiraiya. Here, Jiraiya stands on the verandah of a palace, looking to the side with a sad expression as he watches geese descending for the evening past a glowing full moon. A black robe with a pattern of dragons, clouds and sacred jewels is draped over his shoulders. At right, Princess Tagoto, who in reality is Princes Teruta, looks up from playing the koto with a delighted smile as a stack of papers magically transforms into origami toads, floating through the air over railing towards the ground below. Jiraiya practices toad magic, and is able to conjure up toads to assist him as needed. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jiraiya and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Tagoto-hime. A terrific supernatural design with wonderful detail in the elegant setting and furnishings, framed by a blossoming cherry tree at lower right.
