Taira no Tomomori before the Battle of Dan-no-ura, 1856

Comments - Great kabuki scene depicting the great Taira warrior Shin Chunagon Tomomori just before his impending final defeat at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura. He stands on shore, wearing an elegant butterfly print vest over his suit of armor and a court cap topped with horns. He grips a naginata, gesturing with his other hand as he frowns unhappily. At right, the child Emperor Antoku smiles happily at his protector, his nurse kneeling at his side. A large anchor tangled in a heavy rope rests on the rocks at left, and ships are gathering in the harbor beyond for the upcoming confrontation with the Minamoto.. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Shin Chunagon Tomomori, Onoe Kikugoro IV as Suke no Tsubone, and Jonosuke as Emperor Antoku. Wonderful detail in the armor and clothing, with an interesting setting. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
