Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Awabe Divers

Comments - Beautiful reprint of awabe divers on the shore as waves gently lap the beach, their long hair wet from diving. One beauty stands holding an abalone shell, a cloth tied around her waist. Another kneels next to a basket, drying herself with a small towel. A third woman surfaces in the water, gripping a small knife between her teeth and holding a wriggling fish. Seashells and seaweed dot the sand and a flock of birds flies overhead. A beautiful depiction with fine line work in the hair. Utamaro produced several classic awabe diver subjects, but we've only seen this subject in reprint a few times.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 14 3/4" x 10"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight toning and creasing, slight soiling, faint stain. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
