Courtesans Enjoying Entertainment

Comments - Charming triptych depicting a group of courtesans enjoying an afternoon of musical entertainment. In the center, a shirabyoshi dancer strikes a pose, saving the sleeve of her kimono above her head. She is accompanied by beauties playing the shamisen, koto, and kokyu, an instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. At right, a woman performs a tea ceremony, dipping water from a steaming pot on a floor brazier, a tea bowl on the floor before her. The beauty behind her cuddles a small dog in her arms, while at far left, a courtesan seated in a chair holds a pocket mirror. The room overlooks a lovely garden framed by blossoming cherry trees, with ornate lamps trimmed with colorful tassels hanging overhead. Wonderful detail and vibrant color in the elegant clothing and furnishings.
