Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Priest Seigen and Princess Sakura, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting scene from the tale of the depraved priest Seigen, who pursues the beautiful Princess Sakura, believing her to be the reincarnation of his dead lover, a story that ends in tragedy. Here, Seigen sits on a straw mat, his hair growing out after having been kicked out of the temple. Sakura kneels beside him, holding her hand up in a stopping motion as the samurai at right raises a riding crop above his head in a threatening manner. Ichikawa Danjuro VIII plays Seigen. A handsome scene from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III.
