Original Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print
Visitor Waiting Outside, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a young man pausing outside the door to a home, tilting his head with a sheepish or worried expression. The samurai seated inside looks up at his visitor with suspicion, frowning as he pushes up his kimono sleeve. Behind him a large tiered altar is covered with straw matting. An offering tray holds large rice cakes, flanked by vases and oil lamps with flickering flames. A beauty peers into the room from behind a sliding shoji screen at right, smiling sweetly. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Bando Hikosaburo V, and Sawamura Tanosuke III as Aburaya Okon. An attractive design with attractive color and beautiful detail in the interior furnishings.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few light creases, paper strip at top edge of left panel. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
