Blind Masseur Bun'ya, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of Bun'ya, a blind masseur. His oldest sister sells herself to a brothel so that Bun'ya will have the money to buy his official masseur's license and go into business. Here, Bun'ya is shown visiting his sister, kneeling in the doorway with a rather anguished expression as he learns of her sacrifice. At left, an older woman eavesdrops outside the door, and a kettle sits atop the red coals of a brazier along the inside wall. From left. the actors are Arashi Kichisaburo and Ichikawa Kodanji IV. Nicely composed with expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Tear at bottom edge, small hole, repaired. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
