Construction of the Hall of the Great Buddha: Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Bando Rokuzo, Actually Kagekiyo, 1891

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of Bando Rokuzo, who is actually the great Taira warrior Kagekiyo, fighting for his life on scaffolding at the construction of the Hall of the Great Buddha at Todai-ji. An attacker grabs him around the waist as three pole arms are simultaneously thrust at him. Grasping a handle in each hand, he uses one of the weapons to block the blow from the third. He stares with grim determination at his enemies, his hair pulled back into a ponytail, the short hair on top forming a wild halo above his head. He wears a blue tie-dyed kimono with an interesting pattern of delicately embossed white blossoms. The wooden framework of the scaffolding and the pole arms create a series of diagonals adding energy and action to this dramatic image. A great composition with a handsome and intriguing setting.
