Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Realize One's Parental Love, 1880

Comments - Unusual medical print depicting the ten stages of pregnancy, from conception to birth. Wearing a simple red underskirt, each woman has a transparent or cutaway view of the womb illustrating the growth of a pregnancy, from the first stage at far right to the ten stages at lower left. Each carries a different flower, including an iris, a cherry blossom, a hydrangea, and flowering plum and cherry branches. An intriguing and interesting design representing the Meiji interest in science and medicine. The print is unsigned, but some sources attribute it to Yoshitora. A rare triptych design, one we've never come across complete before.

Artist - Meiji era artist (unsigned)
