Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Birth of a Baby

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting the moments just after a mother has given birth. She kneels in the center with her kimono loosely wrapped about her, smiling as she watches an elderly woman bathing the baby in a shallow wooden tub at left. A ceremony seems to be taking place at right, with a beauty drinking from a red lacquer cup of sake, with two more cups on a tray before her. A young man kneels across from her, while an older man and woman, perhaps parents, look on. A fascinating subject rarely illustrated in woodblock prints.
