Original Yoshifuji (1828 - 1887) Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle at a Castle Gate, circa 1843 - 1846

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting a battle taking place at the entrance to a castle. In front of the gate at left, an elderly man on a black horse angrily raises his riding crop above his head, ready to strike a samurai beside him. In the center a warrior wielding a naginata clashes with a spear thrust by an enemy riding a dapple horse, his loose hair flowing in the breeze. A row of troops stretches out opposite the palace walls under fluttering banners and standards, wooden shields held side to side to form a barrier. Each samurai in the foreground is carefully identified with a name cartouche. A dramatic image with terrific detail in the armor and expressive figures, and a handsome panoramic view of the landscape.

Artist - Yoshifuji (1828 - 1887)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases and stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
