The Soga Brothers, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the night attack from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers. The courtesan in the center has agreed to let the warriors into Suketsune's hunting lodge so they can achieve their quest for revenge. She smiles as she holds out a lantern behind her, wearing a red kimono patterned with butterflies and flowing water. At left, the impatient Soga Goro leans forward aggressively with an angry scowl, a flaming torch in his extended hand. At right, Soga Juro eyes the beauty rather suspiciously, keeping one hand on the scabbard of his sword. The colorful figures are set off against the dark night sky. Nice expressive faces, detailed with burnishing in the black obi, fine bokashi shading, and a dusting of mica across the top of the sky.
