Popular Kabuki Roles, 1881

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene featuring six actors in popular roles from different plays. At upper left, Nakamura Shikan plays the boatman Tenjiku Tokubei, who practiced toad magic and is casting a spell with a magical gesture, his kimono patterned with insects and a large toad. Below him, Suketakaya Takasune plays a distraught young woman with her hair cut short. At top center, an actor portrays the magician Princess Wakana, who wears a kimono patterned with an enormous spider and web. Below her, Onoe Kikugoro plays Kobashi Tsurutaro, holding a magical feather robe under his arm. At top right, Ichikawa Danjuro appears as the priest Narukami, with wild hair and a kimono patterned with jagged flames. Just below, Sadanji plays young Tengu Kiritaro, a tengu mask hanging from a cord between his teeth. Includes a beautiful burnished pattern in the distraught beauty's blue kimono and embossing in the white kimono collar. A great design with wonderful color and detail. We've never come across this subject before.
