A Canopy of Maple Leaves, the Patterned Strings of a Koto, 1847

Comments - Beautiful triptych depicting Prince Genji and a group of beauties enjoying an outing to the colorful maple leaves in autumn. The young nobleman kneels at right, smiling as he places a note inside an elaborately decorated black lacquer palanquin. The young beauty at left watches with a rather dismayed expression, an attendant holding an umbrella over her as maple leaves fall to the ground. Lovely detail in the elegant palanquin and kimono fabrics, including embossing in the white kimono trim, plus soft shading in the sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A lovely design.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 3/4" + margins as shown
