Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Puppet Sanbaso Dancer

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the three characters from the sanbaso dance. From left, the actors are Arashi Rikaku II as the puppet sanbaso dancer, Bando Shuka I as the standing beauty Okina, and Bando Takesaburo I as Senzai. The puppet appears to hang from ropes tied to the blossoming plum tree overhead, bowing his head forward and waving his sleeves, which are patterned with bird's wings. He wears the traditional black sanbaso hat with a red sun on the side. The two figures at right watch him with interest, the beauty smiling slightly. We've seen many depictions of the sanbaso dance before, but never one as a puppet. An interesting subject.
