Series; Meiboku Sendai Hagi

Otokonosuke Striking Nikki Danjo in Rat Form, 1847 - Interesting kabuki series depicting the characters in the popular play "Meiboku Sendai Hagi," a tale based on the disputed succession of the Date clan. The samurai Otokonosuke, who has been faithfully guarding the young heir to the clan, spies a giant rat attempting to steal an important scroll, and strikes it on the head with his iron fan. The rat is actually the evil magician Nikki Danjo, transformed into a rat to steal the incriminating scroll. The samurai brings the handle of his sword down across the back as he raises his fan above his head with an enraged expression, the animal squealing in pain. A great image from this famous tale, from a rarely seen Toyokuni III series.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small loss at edge, wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, stain at edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
