Mt. Fuji Seen from Offshore Takanawa

Series; Set of Views of Fuji from Edo in Iroha Order, 1852

Mt. Fuji Seen from Offshore Takanawa - Interesting design from a rarely seen Kuniyoshi series pairing kabuki actors with views of Mt. Fuji. Here, an unidentified actor appears as the yakko or low-ranking servant Nogitsunehei, staring ahead with a worried frown. He wears a black kimono with the distinctive striped collar identifying his position as a yakko over a red and yellow cloud print kimono. The inset at upper left shows a view of Mt. Fuji seen from offshore at Takanawa, with fishermen in boats in the foreground. The title cartouche is framed by autumn grasses, lily pads, a sword, and a furry purse with an owl face, objects associated with the character. A bold design.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Narrow paper strips on reverse at edges from previous mounting. A couple wormholes, thinning at corner, repaired. Slight toning, a few spots, slight rubbing at corner. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
