Series; Thirty Portraits of Contemporary Actors in Kabuki Plays

Bando Jusaburo III as Oboshi Yuranosuke in Chushingura, 1952 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Bando Jusaburo III as Oboshi Yuranosuke in the classic drama about the 47 ronin, "Chushingura." After Yuranosuke learns that Lord Hangan has been forced to commit suicide, he vows to avenge his master's death. His expression simmers with repressed anger, his mouth firmly set in determination and his eyes slightly narrowed in rage. He stares straight at the viewer, as if inviting confrontation, his sleeves folded across his chest. His thinning hair is pulled smoothly back into a small topknot, just the edge of it visible above his head. He wears a blue and gray dotted robe with his own inverted comma crest over a black kimono, which features the crossed feathers motif of Lord Hangan. A beautifully expressive image with fine bokashi shading around the eyes and a silver mica background.
