Struggle for a Scroll, 1847 - 1848

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play "Takagi Oriemon budo jitsuroku" of three men fighting over a scroll on the shore. The fellow in the center struggles to hang onto one end of the scroll as the two men flanking him brandish swords. At right, Otaka Tonomo is bleeding from wounds to his back and shoulder, and a bloody handprint is faintly visible on his upper arm. He leans forward with a grimace, his gray robe pushed down around his waist. A fleet of small ships with red paper lanterns atop poles can be seen at left, with a large castle towering above the horizon at right. From left, the actors are Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Ryoshi Ganzo, and Seki Sanjuro III as Yokoyama Daizo, and Nakamura Utaemon IV as Otaka Tonomo. Great expressive figures and an atmospheric setting.
