Series; Index of Favorite Actors Showing Off, circa 1840

Ichikawa Hakuen - Interesting scene of a beauty looking over her shoulder with dismay as she reads a sign draped over the top of a straw-wrapped cask of sake. She wears a short checked coat over a blue and gray kimono patterned with stylized shrimp and a red under robe, tied with a yellow plaid obi, her plaid apron gathered up in her hand. Examples of calligraphy hang behind her. At upper right, an inset in the form of a battledore features the actor Ichikawa Hakuen, scowling angrily and holding a fan. A lacquer treatment has been added to the hair and black kimono collars, creating a slight sheen. A intriguing image from this rarely seen series.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small losses at left corners, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
