Soga Juro and Suketsune, 1874

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Kunitaro II as Oiso no Tora, Nakamurao Sojuro I as Soga Juro, and Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kudo Suketsune. In the center, Juro confronts Suketsune, who was responsible for his father's murder, determined to avenge his death. He stares up at him defiantly while Suketsune watches him soberly, a cup of sake in his hand. He wears and elegant purple coat patterned with crane medallions and yellow zigzags over a matching kimono. Nice large figures set off by a deep red background and a simulated black lacquer frame. Includes embossing in the folds of the fan.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of folds between panels. Slight soiling, a few creases at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
