Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as the Minister of the Right, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Sugawara no Michizane, the Minister of the Right, who was exiled after being falsely accused of treason. He looks over his shoulder with a distraught frown, his lower lip almost quivering. He wears a black court robe with a beautiful burnished scroll pattern, and cherry petal blossoms fall through the night sky, a symbol of the intransigence of life. Beautifully printed with fine bokashi shading in the background and embossing in the white under robes.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Soiling, slight toning, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
