Comments - Fantastic night scene of the great warrior Kiso (Minamoto no) Yoshinaka preparing to make his final stand in a bamboo grove at the Battle of Awazu. He rides a dappled horse, a retainer leading his mount through the brush, deep blue water spreading out behind them. He glares back over his shoulder at a fellow samurai on horseback, who returns his angry gaze. Two commoners approach at right carrying sharpened bamboo poles as spears. An incredible composition with the thicket of bamboo poles and the dark foliage creating a rather ominous feeling. A beautifully detailed, atmospheric design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
