Court Ladies Observing War Exercises, 1879

Comments - Interesting scene of upper-class women and soldiers in boats viewing an underwater explosion from a torpedo. Water shoots into the air along with clouds of gray smoke as the viewers watch with interest. At right, a princess sits beneath the canopy of an elegant boat surrounded by ladies-in-waiting who lean forward eagerly, the beauty in the prow gesturing with her hand. Soldiers watch from smaller crafts flying flags, rowing closer to the jet of water. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed and vibrantly colored.

Artist - Shinsai (active Meiji era)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels. Slight thinning at corner, tiny loss at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases, small stains in margin. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
