Enemies Meeting in the Yoshiwara, 1860

Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating the popular kabuki play commonly known as "Sanza Rotaku." Entrusted by his lord with the care of a precious scroll, Nagoya Sanza was banished from his clan after the scroll was stolen by the evil Fuwa Banzaemon, who appears at right dressed in a black kimono tucked into patterned hakama pants. Sanza kneels at left, looking worried, wearing a tan kimono trimmed with plaid and tucked into geometric print pants. The beautiful Katsuragi stands between the men under an open umbrella, smiling sweetly at Sanza. She wears a lovely red kimono bordered with large chrysanthemum blossoms. Rain slants across the darkening sky as cherry blossoms and petals fall, a few jagged bolts of lightning zigzagging across the scene. A great design with large colorful figures, beautifully detailed and colored. The actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Nagoya Sanza, Sawamura Tanosuke III as Maiko Katsuragi, and Nakamura Shikan IV as Fuwa Banzaemon. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A handsome image from this famous drama.
