The Imperial Guard Defeats the Enemy in Hard Fighting at Jilong on the Island of Taiwan, 1895

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Sino-Japanese war of the Japanese Imperial Guard battling at Jilong in Taiwan. Two officers rally the troops by waving their swords high in the air, a Japanese flag fluttering behind the men at left. Clouds of smoke billow from the barrels of the guns fired by the Japanese soldiers. At right, enemies fall to the ground amidst orange bursts of gunfire, the smoke obscuring their compatriots. A warship can be seen at far left with a smaller boat arriving along the rocky shore. A terrific design, wonderfully detailed with embossed curving lines in the smoke and embossed raindrops slanting across the sky, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Artist - Toshihide (1863 - 1925)
