Confrontation at Waterfall, 1865

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a confrontation at a waterfall between two men. The samurai in the center grips his sword with both hands, while the warrior at right draws his own weapon. He wears a white robe patterned with splashing waves and trimmed with fringe over a suit of armor, his bushy hair sticking up atop his head with the rest pulled back into a low ponytail. A man tumbles to the ground before him, clutching a scroll. At left, a beauty wearing a shaggy yellow wig holds aloft a leering horned hannya mask with bulging eyes and fangs, the symbol of a jealous woman consumed by rage. She rings a bell with her other hand, staring over her shoulder with a somewhat haughty expression, dressed in long flowing robes. An alarmed man kneels at her feet, grimacing and throwing out one hand. He wears a black monk's robe over a white kimono with a bold black pattern, a rope tied around his chest. The water rushes straight down behind the, with the dark entrance to a rocky cave at left. An intriguing subject.
