The Battle of Lower Toba at Fushimi in Yamashiro Province, 1874

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Boshin War of the Battle of Lower Toba in Yamashiro Provinces between forces loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate and pro-Imperialists. At right, men on horseback and on foot fight atop a bridge as flames and orange smoke rise behind them against the night sky. The foreground is littered with wounded and dying samurai, blood flowing onto the ground. At left, a samurai gestures towards the battle, bleeding badly from a head wound, a gun in his hand. Heavy, dark tree branches frame the scene, adding to the ominous feeling of the battle.
