Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Hito kana deko dakara Soga" of a courtesan paying a visit to the invalid Ikoma Kojiro, standing outside the door at left with a happy smile, the edge of her scarf caught between her teeth. Inside, the sick man sits up in a bed at right, looking up from a long letter that trails across his knee. His hair is disheveled, and he has a beautiful kimono with a pattern of colorful feathers draped over his shoulders. In the center, Jinpachi tends a small kettle on a brazier, waving the coals with a fan. Behind him, his wife, Okiku, carries a red lacquer tray with two vases on it. Behind her, a shelf on the wall holds a burning oil lamp. The actors include Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Jinpachi, Ichikawa Dannosuke V as Okiku, and Kataoka Gado II as Ikoma Kojiro. Nice expressive figures with a handsomely detailed setting.
