Troops Crossing a Bay, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene of troops crossing a wide bay on log rafts. Dressed for battle in full armor and carrying colorful standards, the men work their way across the calm water, several warriors poling the rafts along. Shields placed edge to edge provide a defensive barrier along the sides of some of the rafts. At bottom center, samurai disembark onto the riverbank, making their way up the hillside carrying pole arms with hooks. At upper right, a general surveys the operation, gesturing with his tasseled command baton as a messenger reports to him. Warriors are gathered all around with their weapons and banners, with blossoming cherry trees framing the scene at right. At far left, the peak of Mt. Fuji rises above the horizon, with a temple rooftop and pagoda spire visible among the treetops. A handsome and interesting samurai triptych with a sweeping landscape view.
