Villain Sneaking up on Minamoto no Yorimitsu, 1870

Comments - Terrific scene of the villain Hakamadare sneaking up on Minamoto no Yorimitsu as he plays the flute while strolling at night. The nobleman plays his instrument as he walks, unaware of the rogue at right, who grips a sword behind his back, ready to attack. Hakamadare wears a black fur vest over a red brocade kimono and suit of armor, his long hair pulled back into a low ponytail tied with yarn, his shorter hair sticking up atop his head. At left, the beauty Bijomaru recoils, hiding behind her raised kimono sleeve. She took, grips a knife behind her back and wears a suit of armor. From left, the actors are Iwai Shijaku II, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Nakamura Shikan. An intriguing, atmospheric subject, with large expressive figures, fine line work in the hair, embossing in the white kimono collar, and a dusting of mica across the top of the night sky. A great design.
