A Parody of Goldfish with Actor's Expressions, 1863

Comments - Terrific comic print depicting goldfish with the faces of kabuki actors. These actors would have been easily recognizable by a contemporary audience. The fish at top center appears to be angry, scowling as it swims along. The two koi in the center smile as they look up at the angry fish. At lower right, a seated man holds a fishing pole, and a flowering water plant blooms at lower left. At upper left, a few smaller fish emerge from the water to nibble at the edges of two large mochi (rice cakes) floating on the surface. The title appears in a fishing net at upper right. These actors would have been easily recognizable by a contemporary audience. A terrific, satirical print, beautifully detailed and shaded, with embossing on the tail of one of the fish.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A few small losses and holes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, rubbing at edges, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
