Illustration of Chinese Soldiers Ambushing Our Officers, 1894

Comments - Unusual depiction of Chinese soldiers ambushing Japanese officers during the Sino-Japanese War. Three enemies hidden in the grass behind the trees allow a group of infantrymen to pass by as they take aim at the officers riding on horseback, waiting for them to get closer. The unsuspecting Japanese ride calmly along, keeping an eye on their surroundings, followed by additional troops. They wear black uniforms decorated with braid, white pants, and tall black leather boots, while their soldiers are dressed in white with red bedrolls slung over their backs, guns shouldered. An interesting subject with a beautiful landscape setting, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and the black tunic of the Chinese man at right.
