Original Tokuriki (1902 - 1999) Japanese Woodblock Print
Rakushisha, 1971

Comments - Best known for his shin-hanga works depicting traditional Japanese landscapes, Tokuriki's real passion was for sosaku hanga or creative prints, a movement in which the artist designed, carved, and printed his own woodblocks. This handsome limited-edition print depicts Rakushisha or the Cottage of Fallen Persimmons, which was once home to the Japanese master poet Matsuo Basho. Tokuriki shows the house from across fields of furrows flanked by large bales of golden straw. A bare tree dotted with orange persimmons grows next to the hermitage, and the trees are colored in warm autumn tones beneath a blue sky. Nice use of bold outlines to convey detail in the foreground, while the row of trees along the horizon blends together without outlines to suggest distance. Signed "T. Tokuriki" in ink within image at lower right, and numbered 106/200 in pencil. A great sosaku hanga print by Tokuriki. A nice choice to collect or display.
