Series; Thirty-six Portraits of Actors in Various Roles
Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Soshichi, 1927 - Powerful image of the actor Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Soshichi in the kabuki play "Hakata kojoro nami makura." The unfortunate merchant Soshichi accidentally becomes mixed up in a smuggling plot when he travels aboard a ship owned by the pirate Kezori. He stares ahead with piercing eyes, his lips tightly closed. A black hood covers his head and he wears a gray patterned outer robe over a purple kimono with a light blue, wave print collar. His sword is tucked under his arm, just the hilt visible. The strong darks of the portrait are set off by a shimmering silver mica background. A fantastic okubi-e or large head portrait by Shunsen of a man whose destiny is changed by circumstance. Includes fine soft pink bokashi shading around the eyes. This subject comes from Shunsen's "Thirty-six Portraits of Actors in Various Roles," a series lavishly published by Watanabe in a limited edition of only 150 prints.
