Comments - Fascinating triptych depicting an event from the first month of 1184 at a Minamoto encampment along a river. The warriors are gathered together to examine the severed heads of fallen enemies to ensure correct identification. At lower right, a retainer kneels next to the heads, which are tied to offering trays and tagged. Minamoto no Yoshitsune sits on a folding stool at center, dressed in a fine suit of armor and horned battle helmet topped with a dragon, a tasseled command baton in his hand. The warrior monk Musashibo Benkei sits on the ground next to him with an open book and writing tools spread on a low table before him. The other samurai watch solemnly, with three seated before the general holding out a pitcher, a fan with a white cloth on it, and a large shell horn. Wonderful color and detail in this interesting subject. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
