Ichikawa Sadanji I as Goto Matabei, 1880

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji I as the samurai Goto Matabei in the midst of a battle. He raises a gun above his head with one hand, dodging the bullets streaking across the battlefield with his other arm flung out at his side. He grimaces angrily, biting his lower lip with his brows furrowed, his head bare with curly locks at the sides and the longer hair pulled back into a thick ponytail. He wears a fine suit of armor over dark blue and green print kimono, his swords at his side. Warriors can be seen in gray silhouette behind him as the fighting continues. A great bold design, beautifully composed and detailed with burnishing in the armor and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, a few creases, small rubbed spot. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
