Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty with a Grasshopper, 1907

Comments - Lovely Meiji era design of a beauty trying to get a grasshopper to climb onto her folding fan. She leans forward, watching the insect intently as she gently pushes the fan towards it. She wears a pale yellow kimono intricately patterned with scrolling vines, patches of aqua blue and light brown, and a pink diamond motif. Her blue obi features hollyhock leaves with silver mica veining. Her hair is pulled softly back into a smooth bun, adorned with a comb and a silver mica hairpin with an embossed leaf. Autumn grasses and bush clover frame a view of the meandering stream in the background. A charming portrait, beautifully printed and detailed with burnishing in the hair. A classic early 20th century beauty subject.
