Three Lucky New Year Dreams: Fuji, Falcon, Eggplant

Comments - Beautiful Utamaro design of passengers riding a ferry across a lake with a view of Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. A young samurai stands in the center with a falcon perched on his gloved hand. Sitting before him, a mother holds her young child over her shoulders. At the back of the boat, a vendor kneels beside his baskets of eggplant, lifting the edge of his hat for a view of the shore ahead. The title of the print comes from the custom of "hatsuyume," the first dream of the New Year, which traditionally suggests the luck of the dreamer for the rest of the year. A person who dreamed of Mt. Fuji, a falcon, and eggplants in a basket was believed to be especially lucky in the coming year. A wonderful triptych with soft color and fine shading in the rosy skyline and mountain. A very handsome old reprint of this lovely subject.
