Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Taira no Kiyomori Ordering the Sun to Stand Still, 1885 - Fantastic Yoshitoshi design of the ruthless general Taira (Sokoku) no Kiyomori standing on a verandah, gesturing imperiously to the sun with his fan. He decided that a temple he was having built at Miyajima should be completed before the day's end; when that appeared unlikely, he ordered the sun to stand still until the building project was finished. He raises his fan above his head as he stares out at the sinking sun, a rosy glow spreading across the horizon. He wears a beautiful black robe with burnished pattern of checks and large circular motifs over delicately embossed white hakama pants. The white and gray scarf draped over his shoulders is also embossed. A striking image with wonderful detail and soft shading in the water and sky.
