47 Ronin, Act 3 - Dramatic scene from Act 3 of the kabuki play "Chushingura," showing Kampei and his lover Okaru at the back gate to the Imperial Palace where he is fighting off guards so the couple can elope. At left, the beauty tangles with one of the guards, looping a sash over his face so he can't see and wielding a sword with her other hand. At right, Kampei steps on the back of another guard while pushing away a pole arm called a sodo-garami or "sleeve tangler." Beautifully detailed with a terrific palace setting. A fantastic illustration from a rarely seen Hokusai series.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 10" x 14 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Vertical centerfold. A couple small losses, wormholes, slight thinning at edge, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
