Onoe Kikugoro IV as Minamoto Yorinobu and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Taira Taro Yoshikado, 1859

Comments - Terrific double portrait of the two enemies Onoe Kikugoro IV as Minamoto Yorinobu and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Taira Taro Yoshikado in the kabuki play "Hanano no Tsuki Uto Hitofushi." At left, Yorinobu looks up at his companion with a worried expression, his eyes wide. He wears a black kamishimo patterned with chrysanthemums over a red kimono and carries an umbrella. His thick hair is pulled back into a bushy upright ponytail tied with embossed cord. At right, Yoshikado stares back at him with a tight-lipped frown as he pushes up the sleeve of his purple kimono, which features a stylized dappled horse. His outer robe is composed of pieces of fur carefully stitched together. A handsome design with large colorful figures, nicely detailed.
