Series; A Didactic Mirror of Good and Evil

Mirror of Good and Evil - Terrific print from a series by Ikkei demonstrating the influence of good and evil on the lives of men and women in Japan. Good and evil appear as tiny humanoids with the appropriate kanji character for good or evil on each face. In the top scene, evil spirits are depicted as crude and violent, inciting violence and immorality such as drinking to excess and neglecting one's family and duties. The good spirits are shown in the bottom design, encouraging and supporting positive behaviors such as honoring the family and being charitable. Nicely composed with handsomely detailed settings, attractive color, and expressive figures. It's rare to find uncut pages like these featuring both images. A fascinating series aimed at encouraging morality and virtuous behavior.

Artist - Ikkei (active circa 1870s)

Image Size - Each image 6 3/8" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Small loss in margin, a couple small tears at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few spots and creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
