A Parisian Collector - From an interesting group of nearly 200 prints that we just purchased from a Parisian estate. Included are some rare Meiji triptychs as well as a large selection of single subjects by Yoshitoshi, Hiroshige II, Kyosai, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni III and others. The collection is especially notable for condition. The prints are crisp, clean, and beautiful - none have been displayed. These old estates are a great source for clean, hard to find designs.
Sixteen Wonderful Considerations of Profit - Kuniyoshi's lovely series "Sixteen Wonderful Considerations of Profit" pairs beautiful women with rakans, Buddhist disciples who have achieved nirvana. The rakans selected for this series struggled with particular problems, such as debt, greed, poverty, and wastefulness, and having overcome these issues, serve as exemplars for conduct. The beauties are shown in scenes from everyday life, with beautifully detailed kimono and obi, and many include household furnishing to set the scene. The rakans appear on an inset in the form of a hanging scroll at upper right. These attractive designs are rarely seen, and are a great choice for a collector of Edo era beauty subjects or Kuniyoshi prints.
