Comments - Terrific illustration from the Satsuma Rebellion of Saigo Takamori and his generals discussing a plan of attack on Kumamoto Castle in Kagoshima. The men are gathered around a large map at right, with Saigo sitting on a chair pointing down at the plan as they discuss their strategy for a siege on the fortress. Cloth panels hung from the trees behind them feature the crest of the Satsuma Clan. At left, rebels attack the castle, which was held by Japanese Imperial Army troops. Brandishing swords, the samurai charge the defenders, whose guns are no match for their traditional weapons. The castle rises above the water behind them, with mountains lining the horizon beneath a dark night sky. An intriguing design, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black jackets and the Satsuma crests, and a dusting of mica across the top of the sky. We've never come across this subject before.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few thinning spots, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creasing, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
