In the Foothills of Mount Fuji, the Soga Brothers Achieve Their Revenge, 1868

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the Soga Brothers' night attack on Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji in their quest to avenge their father's death at the hands of Suketsune. At bottom center, Soga Goro charges ahead with a wicked grin, gripping his sword over his head with both hands as he challenges several startled samurai. At far right, Soga Juro leans forward with an angry scowl as he draws back his weapon, his feet spread firmly apart, victims tumbling to the ground before him. At far left, Suketsune's disguised retainer Goromaru peers out from beneath a woman's red kimono over his head, sheltering behind a stand of straw mats. A heavy rain falls straight down and smoke from a bonfire drifts across the night sky as other warriors rush forward at right to meet the attackers. A terrific, atmospheric design with wonderful color and detail. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
