Winged Warrior Monk, 1865

Comments - Fascinating kabuki scene of a winged warrior monk in the middle of a woods, grimacing angrily as he clutches a scroll or banner. He wears a gray monk's robe over a white kimono with writing on it, tucked into blue brocade pants and worn over armor. In the center, a woman fastening a scarf beneath her chin looks up with a surprised smile, while the archer behind her eyes the monk with a frown, holding his bow over his shoulder. At left, a young boy emerges from the reeds at the edge of the water, a large cloth sail behind him. Ichikawa Kodanji appears as the monk. An intriguing and unusual subject, detailed with embossing in the white kimono and shading in the night sky.
