Restaurant at Ueno

Series; Thirty-six Modern Restaurants, 1878

Thirty-six Modern Restaurants - Kunichika's 1877 - 1878 series "Thirty-six Modern Restaurants" depicts beauties at popular restaurants in different locations. Women are shown serving a meal, relaxing in the garden or on a verandah, or arriving or leaving a teahouse. These colorful designs are nicely detailed with handsome interior and exterior settings showing an interest in Western perspective. An attractive Meiji era beauty series, seldom seen.

Restaurant at Ueno - Lovely image of a beauty standing in the pavilion of a restaurant in Ueno overlooking the water. Her kimono is shaded from black to soft gray, tied with an olive green obi featuring a dragon. A garden of colorful flowers surrounds a low fence behind her, and cherry trees blossom overhead. A wooden tree trunk forms the support for the roof, and folding chairs with wicker seats are places atop a low table encircling the trunk. An attractive design with wonderful detail.
