Series; Elegant Portraits of Actors, 1862

Nakamura Shikan IV, 1862 - Handsome early Yoshitoshi kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan IV. The actor appears in a diamond-shaped frame made of twigs or reeds, looking over his shoulder with an angry grimace, with a large red and white crest behind him. He wears a white summer cotton kimono with a bold pattern in blue, patting the side of his face with a light blue and white print towel. Two poem slips fluttering in the breeze below feature verses by him in his own calligraphy, with a tangle of delicate greenery and blue-gray reeds filling the background, which is shaded from deep blue to pale green. A great design, detailed with a dusting of mica across the top of the dark blue sky. We've only seen two other prints from this series before. A great choice for the serious Yoshitoshi collector.
